The Lafayette Escadrille was the first all-American squadron fighting in World War 1. The squadron started with Nieuports, but progressed to SPADs, in which they could go up against even the Flying Circus and emerge unscathed. The SPAD was the sports car of WWI fighters - fast, maneuverable, and well-armed.
