Mountain Bluebird In Winter - AI+digital artwork by Donna Kennedy-edited in PS and Topaz Studio…
The powder-blue male Mountain Bluebird (Sialia currucoides) is among the most beautiful birds of the West. Living in more open terrain than the other two bluebirds, this species may nest in holes in cliffs or dirt banks when tree hollows are not available. It often seeks its food by hovering low over the grass in open fields. Mountain Bluebirds eat mostly insects, especially during breeding season. Beetles, grasshoppers, and especially caterpillars top the menu. In winter they go after small fruits, seeds, and insects when available. Commonly eaten plant items include grapes, currants, elderberries, cedar berries, and the seeds of sumac, mistletoe, and hackberry. Spiders are also an important part of the adult diet. Nestlings are fed primarily beetles and grasshoppers.
The sky-blue male is almost unmistakable; other all-blue birds, like Indigo Buntings, are much darker. Females are gray with blue tinges; gray flanks contrast with their white belly. They have longer wings and tail than other bluebirds.
It is the state bird of Idaho and Nevada.
