Description
This iconic raptor requires mature or old growth stands of trees near large bodies of water with an abundance of fish, which are usually their primary food source. They frequently practice kleptoparasitism, stealing prey from other predators. Juvenile plumage is brown with white streaks, changing to adult plumage at sexual maturity (4-5 years old). Eagles mate for life, unless a partner dies or the pair consistently fails at breeding attempts. Mature male and female eagles have identical plumage, but females are usually about 25% larger than males.
