Description
These tiny owls are only 20 cm long, with a wingspan of around 50 cm. They live in dense woods across North America, favoring coniferous forests for nesting and deciduous forests for overwintering. Their diet is almost exclusively small rodents, though they have also adapted to eat crustaceans, aquatic insects, and frogs on the Pacific coast. Their name comes from their call, which sounds similar to a saw being sharpened on a whetstone. They practice sequential polyandry, wherein the mother may have several clutches of eggs in one mating season with different males. The father hunts while the mother sits on the eggs, then when the first batch of offspring have grown feathers, the father is left in charge while the mother moves on to find a new mate. Their diminutive size makes them vulnerable to predation by hawks and other owls. Like many others in the owl family, they have excellent hearing and low light vision.
